The MSSI Lab is a space for ISI MSSI students to do their research and course work. The lab is located on the 3rd floor of Malone Hall in room 316 at requires a J-Card to enter. Students are typically given access to this room on or before New Student Orientation. If your J-Card does not allow you to access the room, please visit the ISI administrative office in Malone 160.

Cameras and Security
Several cameras have been installed in the MSSI lab. While they are there for your safety, please do not rely on cameras to prevent theft. Always secure your belongings before leaving the lab and do not leave valuables overnight.

Computing Resources
MSSI Workstations
The MSSI Lab houses 7 general-use workstations for MSSI students that can be accessed using an MSSI Account.

WiFi
Both the MSSI Lab and the Build Lab have access to the MSSI WiFi network that can be accessed using an MSSI Account.

Projectors
On either side of the lab are two short-throw projectors and a speaker system that covers the entire room. Students wishing to use these projectors can do so by connecting to the HDMI port under the North-East table in the audio-visual floorbox. In order to turn on the projectors and adjust the volume, there should be white Epson remote nearby. Please remember to turn off the projectors and return the floor box to its original state when you're finished.

Please be respectful of your fellow students using the lab by keeping the volume as low as possible and only displaying appropriate content.

* Connect to SITATUNGA, the MSSI Shared Storage server.
* Connect to STEAM, the MSSI license server for FTK and IDA Pro.
* Access hacking resources!
** The Hopkins network blocks access to certain websites related to network security or hacking. You don't have to worry about any filters on this network.
* Connect directly to internal research and coursework VMs.
* Access to the MSSI Lab Printers

Connecting
To connect, look for the "MSSI-LAB" ESSID on the 3rd floor of Malone Hall and use your MSSI Account to authenticate.

Please keep in mind that while this and other ISI networks give you much more freedom than JHU, you are still bound by the terms and conditions set in the ISI Rules of Use for the MSSI Lab and General-Use Computers as well as local, state and/or federal laws and JHU's Computing Ethics Policy.

The MSSI workstations are all running Microsoft Remote Desktop. To connect, you must be on the MSSI network, WiFi, or VPN.

When choosing a host/server to connect to, use the following format, replacing "XX" with a number between 00 and 07: MSSI-XX.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu

Only one student may be logged in to an MSSI machine at a time. If the system is currently in use, you will be notified when trying to connect.

While you are able to kick other students off, please refrain from doing so. If you believe another student is kicking you off a lab system, please contact [mailto:support@isi.jhu.edu support] and we will handle it accordingly.

<span style="color:#f00">FTK is no longer supported in the MSSI lab. This article is for historical purposes only.</span>

ISI maintains a VM with FTK preconfigured for students to use on their own systems.
Prerequisites
In order to run the FTK VM, students will first need to have VMWare Workstation or VMWare Player installed. This is available on all MSSI Lab systems and can be downloaded by all students using the Kivuto / VMWare Academic account configured for them at the beginning of the semester.

Once you have a system running VMWare available, you will need to be connected to the MSSI Lab Network. Obviously the MSSI-LAB systems are already connected to this network, but students can connect their own devices using the MSSI-LAB wifi network available on the 3rd floor of Malone Hall (using their MSSI-LAB login and password), any available ethernet port in the ISI Build Lab in Malone 356, or by using the VPN.

Downloading
Once you're on the MSSI-LAB network, you can download the VM from the following share:

* Windows: \\sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu\Shared\Forensics\FTK-WIN10-VM\
* MacOS: smb://sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu/Shared/Forensics/FTK-WIN10-VM/
* Linux: smb://sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu/Shared/Forensics/FTK-WIN10-VM/

Note: If you access this share on a non MSSI-LAB computer, you'll need to authenticate using your MSSI Account.

Copy all the files in the folder to your local system and them run the VMX file using VMWare. If you are asked whether you moved or copied it, choose "copied".

You should now be able to access the FTK Software.
