About

ISI maintaines a VM with FTK preconfigured for students to use on their own systems.

Prerequisites

In order to run the FTK VM, students will first need to have VMWare Workstation or VMWare Player installed. This is available on all MSSI-LAB systems and can be downloaded by all students using the Kivuto / VMWare Academic account configured for them at the beginning of the semester.

Once you have a system running VMWare available, you will need to be connected to the MSSI-LAB network. Obviously the MSSI-LAB systems are already connected to this network, but students can connect their own devices using the MSSI-LAB wifi network available on the 3rd floor of Malone Hall (using their MSSI-LAB login and password), any available ethernet port in the ISI Build Lab in Malone 356, or by using the VPN.

Downloading

Once you're on the MSSI-LAB network, you can download the VM from the following share:

  • Windows: \\sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu\Shared\Forensics\FTK-WIN10-VM\
  • MacOS: smb://sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu/Shared/Forensics/FTK-WIN10-VM/
  • Linux: smb://sitatunga.mssi-lab.isi.jhu.edu/Shared/Forensics/FTK-WIN10-VM/

Note: If you access this share on a non MSSI-LAB computer, you'll need to authenticate using your MSSI-LAB username and password. In many cases this will require you to prefix your username with "MSSI-LAB\". For example, if your JHED ID is jsmith1, your username will be MSSI-LAB\jsmith1

Copy all the files in the folder to your local system and them run the VMX file using VMWare. If you are asked whether you moved or copied it, choose "copied".

You should now be able to access the FTK Software.
